UV Safety Information

To Whom It May Concern:

Ultra-Violet Products (UVP) manufacture many UV lamps, all of which can be

divided into one of four catagories. Safety with UV is paramount. Please

consult the list below for advice in regard to which safety precautions are

required with your lamp. If there is anything that you do not understand or

need clarification on, then please contact your local UVP representative.

365nm Longwave BLB (tubes are purple)

This type of UV is harmless. It is the type of UV that is used in a nightclub to check

invisible ink stamps on customers’ hands. These lamps are not at all dangerous

unless the filter is damaged in which case they should not be used.

365nm Longwave UV (tubes are white)

Longwave UV is at the least harmful end of the UV spectrum. It should still however

be treated with caution and for very powerful units (above 25 Watts) it is

recommended that UV protective spectacles are worn whilst the lamp is on.

302nm Midrange UV (tubes are white)

302nm is also known as 310nm and 312nm by other manufacturers. Midrange UV

should be treated with vigilant caution. Users of midrange UV lamps should always

wear either UV Protective Goggles or a UV Protective Face Shield. It should be

noted that reflected UV is also dangerous and that this should be considered when

wearing a Face Shield and working over a reflective surface.

254nm Shortwave UV (tubes are clear)

Shortwave UV is the most dangerous of the UV wavelengths. It can cause arc-eye (a

painful sand like feeling in the eyes) and / or burn the skin. Users of shortwave UV

should ALWAYS protect themselves by wearing long sleeves and a UV Protective

Face Shield. Again, it should be noted that reflected UV is also dangerous and that

this should be considered when wearing a Face Shield and working over a reflective

surface. On a light spectrum, shortwave UV is next to X-Rays.
